August often feels like the beginning of the fall season, with back-to-school and many popular coffee shops adding pumpkin spice back to the menu.

But if you’re not quite ready to jump into fall or it’s still too hot to order a pumpkin spice latte where you’re at (me, writing this on a 95 degree day 👋🏻), I’ve got you with this month’s drink!

In this month’s book club read, Good Soil, Jeff shares numerous stories about food and recipes, highlighting how they often evoke memories of life with loved ones. Making and serving food is never just about what’s on the plate. Cooking food is often a way we show love, just as Jeff’s mom did for him.

While cookie butter isn’t mentioned in the book, it’s one of those flavors that instantly brings comfort and warmth. This recipe is my way of savoring a slow transition into autumn, and letting even a simple cup of coffee be a small act of delight, joy, and love.

Just as Jeff uses family recipes, fresh veg, and garden imagery to tell his story, perhaps this week you can notice how the taste and smell of food (or coffee) reminds you of gratitude for the people who have shaped you, too.

Favorite Coffee Tools

Before we dive into the recipe, here are a few tools that I regularly use when making coffee or tea. Some of these items are essential for making coffee at home, while others are purely aesthetic and fun!

  • electric whisk (for cold foam)

  • espresso machine (cheaper option if you already have a grinder/can grind your coffee at the store/cafe)

  • espresso cups with pouring spout

  • electric kettle (for pour overs/tea)
